Southern quail outlook for fall below average

March 27, 2003

A slightly below-average quail season is being predicted for the fall in southern Arizona, which didn't receive nearly the amount of precipitation that fell in the central part of the state.

"We didn't get the great rains the Phoenix area did, but the rains we got were well-timed," said Ron Olding, wildlife program manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department's regional office in Tucson.

" . . . Quail are calling up a storm out there, especially in the Oracle area and around Tucson."

As for his prediction, Olding said: "That's not all bad. Our average quail year is actually pretty good hunting, especially compared to other states."
