shackdaddy,

I found it to be as good as my last go-round two years ago. More young bucks and not as many of the 3-4 yr olds I normally see. We were almost exclusively at the lower elevations. Those putting in the time will have opportunities. Maybe not on the old guys, but plenty of younger ones to go round.

As usual, I'll be at the Meadow Cliff Lodge in Coleville, and will hunt Monitor Pass above Topaz Lake. It's my turn to carry a bear tag in X-12 and hunt deer in D-6. St Mary's up on top of Sonora Pass isn't all that bad. At least I can watch a few small herds crossing back over into X-12. And of course, X-12 is usually closed when that happens. Maybe an early winter will get the herd back into X-12 for you guys?

My dad and I left early Friday morning for a day of scouting before the opener. I have hunted X12 and X9a about five times and have fished and quail hunted in the area for 30 years, so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

We scouted up high and low to get a feel of where the populations of deer would be. We found lots of deer up high and hundreds of deer low, sorry not deer , deer hunters. Seems like we found everyone that had received a tag for X12 on Friday..

We saw about 14 deer on Friday most of them were around the marine camp. We wanted to find a new spot that was away from all the people and roads. The spot we picked was an area I've never hunted before but it looked good and years back I killed a nice 4 x 4 in a meadow below where I wanted to hunt.

We hiked back in only to find that several other guys had the same idea. There was a group of 8 Hispanic hunters that were pretty amazing I assume only 4 guys had tags since they each had a partner without a gun.
They were really loud and would bust the brush and aspens for each other. Most of us sit up high and glass the canyons until it gets hot and then we go back to camp until the evening hunt . These guys stay out and stir things up all day and get the deer moving. Lots of respect for them since they killed 3 deer in the same area I was and one of the bucks was the largest deer I've ever seen in person (170 class). the other two were 4 x 3 and 4 x 4.They were back in the same spot the next day for their 4th deer and I herd them shoot around 8:00am. I spoke with several of them , they didn't speak English very well but were very nice and was respectful of where I was going to hunt and where my dad was. They were a family of grandfathers, fathers and sons, man were they in good shape!

My dad and I I didn't even see a buck. We did hear a lot of shooting. I Made the same mistake that I've made while I fishing for tuna. While fishing we will listen to the radio and hear all the other boats and their hookups and how they've limited out early , you get kind of depressed especially when you not doing very well. We got some new 2 way extended range radios and we were able to picked up many conversations of deer hunters with big bucks taken and all the bucks people are seeing. It got frustrating!!

We came back empty handed, but plan on going back up a couple more weekends so we can fill our tags. It was pretty hot, hopefully the cooler weather will move in. We saw a total of 50 deer and tons of mountain quail.

Well just got back from hunting X12 me and the son had a very good time up there even tho we did not score its just plane good to get out in the mountains. One person in our party walked away with a 2X3 and 6 other bucks in different camps scored, yesterday the son was scoped and scared the living crap out of both of us, The words that came out of his mouth to those hunters as they scoped him could be heard a long way. well we will try to get back up there at the close of the season pray for snow. good luck to all.
