Sea lion removal at Bonneville Dam


WHAT: A briefing for members of the news media on plans by the Washington and Oregon Departments of Fish and Wildlife to resume efforts to remove California sea lions from the section of the Columbia River immediately below Bonneville Dam.

WHEN: Friday, February 27, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

WHERE: The Washington side of Bonneville Dam.

PARTICIPANTS: Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA Fisheries, Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission

BACKGROUND: Removal of California sea lions preying on threatened and endangered salmon and steelhead below Bonneville Dam could begin as early as March 1. Efforts to remove animals could depend on a federal court's decision on a pending court case.

DIRECTIONS: Members of the media should arrive at the Washington side of Bonneville Dam at 10 a.m. in order to be escorted onto the dam facility. From Portland/Vancouver travel east on Highway Hwy. 14 approximately 40 miles. Turn right on to Dam Access Road and proceed to the dam entrance.

Members of the media may be asked to show credentials.

WEATHER PLANS: In the event of severe weather, a decision to cancel or reschedule will be announced by 8:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27.
