Georgia Outdoor Writers Hall of Fame Locating In Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center

6/5/08

The Georgia Outdoor Writers Hall of Fame has found a fitting home: Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center.

Charlie Elliott, the late outdoors writer and advocate, is not only the center's namesake, he is the first person the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association chose for the Hall of Fame.

Members agreed in April to place the plaque listing inductees and a booklet describing each at the state Wildlife Resources Division center in Mansfield. The display will be in the visitors' center. "It's a great opportunity for us to honor Charlie. And we think it's a wonderful place to display the plaque," association treasurer John Trussell said.

Elliott was inducted in 2007. Four Georgians were added this year: outdoor journalist Dean Wohlgemuth, wildlife ranger Arthur Woody, Lake Seminole guide Jack Wingate and George Perry, who caught the world-record largemouth bass. Inductees are chosen largely for their contributions to the Georgia outdoors and conservation, according to Trussell.

Alesia Rast of the wildlife center said Elliott "would be so very proud to offer this spot for all visitors - children and adults - to see what each of these special folks is being recognized and rewarded for."

Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center combines a state wildlife management area, public fishing area and regional wildlife education and conference center on 6,400 acres southeast of Atlanta. Details at www.georgiawildlife.com (http://www.georgiawildlife.com/).
